“There is no
standard of care in the (chiropractic) profession. As Forest Gump might
say, “A chiropractic office is like a box of chocolates: You never
know what you’re going to get!” “Chiropractic neck manipulation procedure should be banned because it is dangerous and useless” Source: Dr. Murray Katz, Montreal pediatrician. After an exhaustive
and conscientious study of the chiropractic profession, the Faculty of
Medicine of McGill University writes simply that: The theory which underlies
chiropractic is false. Families Against Abusive Chiropractic Treatments (FAACT) is a newly formed advocacy group that wants to have Canadian health regulations changed in every province to stop chiropractors from practicing neck manipulation. Founder of the grassroots movement is Michael deChamplain of Vancouver. His wife Kathryn, 44 years of age, suffered a dissected vertebral artery following neck manipulation by a chiropractor. An active business executive at the time, Mrs. DeChamplain was a partner in a mortgage and land development company. She was hospitalized in 2001 and to this day still struggles with partial paralysis and blindness in the right eye as well as continuing emotional and psychological complications. Mr. deChamplain says he established FAACT to make the public aware of the dangers of chiropractic treatments, especially neck manipulation, and to establish a registry to record chiropractic injuries. He also wants the federal and provincial governments to undertake an impartial inquiry. “If we can save one person from being injured or prevent a death, our mission will be accomplished,” he stated. “I know the Canadian Chiropractic Association will deny any statements we make and attack people like myself, my poor wife, other victims and even the medical profession.” He says the chiropractic
treatments involving neck manipulation, leading to debilitating injury
or death, appear to be on the increase with many medical experts, including
neurologists, publicly voicing their opposition to the practice by chiropractors. ^
